Well... here are some of my thoughts, although the savage that I used to have was a 97, so im assuming they're the same. (I bought it with 500 miles on it)

Not sure about the second gear or the squealing thing...

Re-jetting -- anyone i've talked to about it says that in order for your bike to run properly with an aftermarket muffler, you need to re-jet. The thing is you don't HAVE to do it, but again I was told, that it could possibly hurt the performance without doing it. Supposedly the bikes stock run towards the lean side anways (which is easy to fix with a screw, cant remember what its called) but add an aftermarket muffler... chug chug.

As for going fast. I got mine up to around 75/80 and my engine sounded like it was going to explode. Everyone I talked to said it was normal for a single cylinder and that it could take it. It sounded too much to me like the engine was overworking though...

As for the going too fast... I rode a CBRF4i 600 and it weighed 20lbs more and those go about 160 stock (I only got it up to 145). I would say that they are as safe as any other bike at high speeds just as long as you feel comfortable on a bike. Granted, i felt a lot more comfortable going 100+ on the CBR but thats just because it had more power to accelerate and was at an agressive riding position. I say if you want to go fast, a sportier bike would be the way to go (a good starter one is the SV650 )
